(File Photo) Hours after protesting wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, were detained and booked for violating law and order by trying to march to the new Parliament Sunday, Delhi Police detained more wrestlers from the protest site at Jantar Mantar.
A senior officer said: Around half a dozen protesters were detained after a police team consisting of eight to 15 personnel went to Jantar Mantar again late on Sunday and they were taken to the police station.
The officer did not confirm whether the agitators were released. Meanwhile, security arrangements have been tightened around the protest site and heavy barricading has been erected. “Entry is also not allowed to anyone in view of a possible law and order situation,” said the officer.
On Sunday, several protesters were detained and booked under sections of rioting for marching towards the new Parliament building, outside which a women’s mahapanchayat was scheduled in support of the wrestlers’ protest. They were released later in the day. Soon after the wrestlers were whisked away from Jantar Mantar, the tarpaulin-roofed tent, their home for over a month, was pulled down by the police.
The wrestlers have been protesting at Jantar Mantar since April 23 seeking the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has been accused of sexual harassment by seven women wrestlers, including a minor.
