According to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), services between Central Secretariat and Kashmere Gate stations were regulated between 5.21 am and 8.59 am after the overhead equipment (OHE) tripped, triggered by monkeys in the underground section. (Representational/ File) Three monkeys led to a disruption in the Delhi Metro on Thursday morning, with operations on its Yellow Line being impacted for nearly four hours.
According to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), services between Central Secretariat and Kashmere Gate stations were regulated between 5.21 am and 8.59 am after the overhead equipment (OHE) tripped, triggered by monkeys in the underground section.
“To ensure that no harm is caused to these monkeys, which were initially spotted between Central Secretariat and Patel Chowk section in the Down direction (going towards HUDA City Centre), services were regulated. Normal train services were run between Samaypur Badli and Kashmere Gate and Central Secretariat to HUDA City Centre sections as two independent loops. Train services on the affected section between Kashmere Gate and Central Secretariat section were run through Up direction track due to the presence of monkeys and restoration of OHE on the Down direction track. This resulted in bunching of trains and subsequent delays primarily on the affected section of Yellow Line during this period,” the DMRC said in a statement.
This is not the first time the OHE have been tripped because of birds or animals. In December last year, a bird had dropped a stray wire on the OHE, causing a short circuit.
On December 25, services on a section of the Magenta Line were disrupted after a delivery drone belonging to a pharma company landed on the tracks.
Sections of Metro lines that are over the ground face disruptions because of external issues, especially damage to overhead equipment, since the system is uncontrolled.
However, the incident on Thursday is not very common, since the stations and OHE are underground.
The DMRC also contacted forest and MCD officials to rescue the monkeys.
