Missing valuables, documents keep Village cops on their toes

While the Commonwealth Games Village may be like a veritable fortress from the outside, the situation inside is not quite the same.

While the Commonwealth Games Village may be like a veritable fortress from the outside, the situation inside is not quite the same. Zambian squash coach Philip Musonda discovered this to his dismay when his passport reportedly went missing from his flat (702B) sometime during the last few days.

Officials suspect that the incident, concerning passport number ZN157272,may be a case of theft. Sources say that besides this, several other items — including baggage belonging to visitors — have also vanished into thin air. Investigations by the Delhi Police have revealed that while “some house-keeping staffers either roam unnecessarily around residential areas, where flats of athletes are located”,others do not “lock their rooms after cleaning them”.

Officials said this is a serious issue, considering that athletes often go for practice sessions leaving their valuables behind. Till now, four NCRs (non-cognizable reports) in this regard have already been registered at the Commonwealth Games Village police station. CWG police officers have taken Musonda’s statement, police said, adding that the housekeeping staff at Residential Tower no 28,where Musonda resides with Zambia athletes, will be questioned. Musonda could not be contacted as he had gone for an event.

After staying at the Village at night, the athletes and coaches of all the 71 teams usually leave in the morning for practice sessions and then for events. “They leave their stuff behind, and our housekeeping staff clean their rooms,” a Games official said.

Officers from the Village police station have been allotted specific towers for carrying out security inspections and looking into complaints from athletes, coaches and officials. “Sometimes, players forget their bags around the place. They could easily get stolen as hundreds of people work in the residential zone,” a source said.
