Mercury crosses 40-degree mark again

The summer kept up its hot spell in the Capital with mercury continuing to soar above the 40-degree mark during the last few days.

The maximum temperature on Sunday was 42.4 degrees Celsius,over a degree more than yesterday’s 40.6 degrees,and one degree above normal for this time of the year,the Met Department said.

The minimum was recorded at 29.3 degrees,two degrees above normal,it said. Yesterday,the minimum temperature was 28.1 degrees.

For the next 24 hours,the weatherman has predicted a mainly clear sky with the possibility of dust storms in some areas . The maximum temperature is likely to be around 43 degrees Celsius and the minimum around 30 degrees.

The highest temperature in May was 44.2 degrees Celsius,the season’s highest so far. In the last 10 years,May has recorded a maximum temperature of above 44 degrees five times. The record for the past 10 years was 46 degrees on May 19,2002.
