MCD to track mid-day meals

To keep a daily record of mid-day meals served in its schools, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has decided to maintain a register.

To keep a daily record of mid-day meals served in its schools, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has decided to maintain a register. It will record number of meals served and number of students who attended class on that particular day. All numbers will be put online,to ensure transparency.

According to a senior official of the MCD,the system will be in place by July when students return from the summer vacation. The MCD has already started installing computers in its schools. The administration of each school will be given the task of tallying the numbers.

The decision comes a couple of months after a controversy rocked the MCD Standing Committee meeting in February. The Opposition Congress had alleged that the number of students said to be benefiting from the mid-day meals was greater than the number of students registered in 1,746 MCD schools.

There are around 9.75 lakh children in MCD schools, but according to MCD records,9.94 lakh children benefit from the mid-day meal scheme.

Citing the difference in the two figures, the Congress had claimed that the MCD is preparing meals for an additional 20,000 children, causing a loss of Rs 2 lakh per day.

The MCD had clarified that the controversy was due to a misunderstanding. “There are 44 aided schools and we give mid-day meals to 13,000 children in these institutions too,” said a party representative.
