MCD pulls in record tax for weekend

After failing to realise its property tax collection target by over Rs 400 crore, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is leaving no stone unturned to draw out the defaulters to pay their dues by the cut-off date — March 31.

After failing to realise its property tax collection target by over Rs 400 crore, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is leaving no stone unturned to draw out the defaulters to pay their dues by the cut-off date — March 31.

Among the civic body’s efforts to encourage defaulters are the new penalty-free amnesty scheme, print and video advertisements, and keeping the tax windows open on the weekend. And the results are showing — almost 2,000 people paid their taxes on Saturday, according to MCD officials.

The number, officials said,is the highest on a single non-working day in the past four years — the MCD received Rs 60.24 lakh as property tax from 1,933 taxpayers on Saturday. The MCD has failed in realising its property tax targets since introducing the unit area method of property tax computation. But this financial year seems promising for the civic body,as it has already collected more than Rs 1,000 crore as property tax against its target of Rs 1,200 crore.

The reason, say property tax officials,is the MCD’s new “client-oriented” approach. “We have made it really easy for taxpayers this time,” an official from the property tax department said. “Unlike previous years, when the amnesty scheme waived off only a part of the penalty for defaulters, this time we are giving them a chance to pay the dues on zero-interest and penalty.”

MCD’s property tax office will remain open on Sunday as well.
