A day before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh meets Manipur Chief Minister Ibobi Singh over the July 23 encounter killing, protesters gathered at the Jantar Mantar demanding strict action against the perpetrators by fixing accountability.

The Manipur Students’ Association Delhi,People’s Union for Democratic Rights and the Jamia Teachers’ Solidarity Association were among the many organisations that supported the protest.

Angry slogans such as ‘Indian State is Responsible’,‘Manipur under Siege’ and ‘Punish the Guilty’ rent the air.

Vijay Singh,a member of Delhi University’s academic council, said,“Encounters have become the norm in Manipur, due to the legal sanction given to executions. This case has attracted attention because the photographic evidence has become a huge embarrassment for the government.”

The gathering largely comprised the Manipuri community in Delhi, mainly students and young professionals.

Rojesh,a former president of the Manipur Students’ Association, who was organising this protest said,“Whoever is guilty should be punished. Manipur is one of the states with the highest encounters in the country. We cannot let this go unpunished.”

R K Samaiyama,a student at Zakir Husain College, skipped his college festival to show solidarity. “If the AFSPA is removed, peace will come to Manipur,” he said. “I had to be here because Manipur’s voice needs to be heard.”
