Two musicians walk in playing shehnais. A group of men carrying a palanquin follow them on to the stage. As soon as the palanquin comes to rest on the floor, the red satin curtain parts and Varun Dhawan, dressed in a white shirt that resembles a kurti in its cut and silhouette, stumbles out. “Hello ji. My name is Humpty Sharma,” says the actor in a Delhi accent.
After this first gag that had the audience in splits, the event to launch the promo of Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania took a predictable course.
The event, held at a suburban theatre, was also attended by newbie director Shashank Khaitan who is proclaimed to be Johar’s “lucky 13th” talent being launched by Dharma Productions. Television star Siddharth Shukla, who plays Alia’s fiance in the film, was also present.
Johar stuck with his assumed role as mentor to Alia, Varun and Shashank, but also didn’t stop from landing them in awkward situations. At one point, he told the media that Alia should be asked whose swearing-in ceremony it is today, referring to the meme on the actress doing rounds online. “Come on, Alia, repeat after me: Ab ki baar, Modi sarkaar,” he said, laughing.
