A maze of light waves surround a chair in an image that transcends from figurative to abstract. The black-and-white frame, photographer Amit Dey notes, is where his engagement with light began. “I first started photographing small objects with a book reading lamp; then I felt it was an interesting subject in itself. I took a chair and rotated the light around it, the result came very interesting; as if light was encompassing the chair,” says Dey. That marked the onset of his series where the advertising photographer plays with various sources of light, from bulbs and torches to flash lights. His work is displayed with painter Suman Sengupta in the exhibition “Shift Collective” at Lalit Kala Akademi. Sengupta’s paintings, meanwhile, depict shifts in his subjects over the years — from a roaring leopard to a rabbit in a tuxedo. The exhibition is on till December 27.
