The history and fate of Western Africa’s Republic of the Gambia, the smallest of the African continent,is tied to the river which gave the country its name. The accessibility provided by river Gambia, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean from mainland Africa, meant that those shopping for slaves could make away with at least three million individuals in the 18th Century. Four of the five divisions of the country are named Lower,Central,North, and Upper Rivers. It probably got too obvious by the time they came to naming the fifth; they merely called it “Western”. The Gambia has Senegal on three sides and a 50 mile-coastline on the fourth. The river runs right through Gambia; so much that the country is merely less than 30 miles wide at its widest point.

The country won independence on February 18,1965,making it the first and last British colony in Western Africa. The Gambia has attended all but the 1986 Edinburgh Games since their first time to the Games in 1970,held in Edinburgh itself. In 1970,they won a bronze in Men’s High Jump. Beginner’s Luck: they have won none since.
