Karan puts W.R in command

Western Railways inched closer quarter-final league with a 3-1 win over CRPF XI in their knock-out match of the 47th senior Nehru hockey tournmant at the Major Dhyanchand Stadium on Monday.

Western Railways inched closer quarter-final league with a 3-1 win over CRPF XI in their knock-out match of the 47th senior Nehru hockey tournmant at the Major Dhyanchand Stadium on Monday. Karan scored a brace,putting Railways ahead in the 13th minute.

With both team playing defensively,it was more of a defensive lapse by the CRPF men that resulted in Railways going ahead. The first half saw action but both teams were content assessing the opposition. After the break,Karan scored in the 44th minute to double the lead for Railways. Coming in as a substitute,Rajesh Kumar reduced the margin in the 65th minute.

But even as CRPF went all out on attack looking for the second goal, left the defence unguarded and Manish Saini made use of a counter-attack by Western railways to slam the winner a minute from time. Meanwhile,Indian Navy take on a star-studded Bharat Petroleum in their knock-out match on Tuesday.

Junior semifinals
In the junior tournament,Bright Scholar Sr Sec School,Sonepat qualified for the semi-finals riding on Amrit Chattha’s winner in the dying minutes of the game,defeating Dhudial Khalsa Sr Sec School,Patiala 3-2 in their pool match.

Navdeep Singh opened the scoring for Bright Scholar in the 6th minute but an immediate counter-attack saw Kulbir Singh levelling scores in the next minute.

After a competitive first half,the second was a more sedate affair as both teams went on the defensive. Even as it looked that the game would end in a draw,Chattha’s strike ensured a last four spot for Bright Scholar.

In another match,Lyallpur Khalsa Sr Sec School,Jalandhar beat Bangladesh Institute of Sports,Dhaka 3-0 to qualify for the semifinals. Harpal Singh scored twice and Major Singh once for the winners.
