JNU votes for student members of GSCASH

The elections for the student members of the Jawaharlal Nehru University's Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH) saw only 36 per cent of the students turning up to vote.

The elections for the student members of the Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH) saw only 36 per cent of the students turning up to vote. The low turn out was attributed to the ongoing mid-semester exams.

“Voting started at the Students Activity Centre at Teflas at 9 am. There was a break for lunch and voting resumed at 2.30 pm,” Chandan, the chairperson of the 30-member election committee, said. The last vote was polled at 5.30 pm.

The counting of votes will begin on Friday night and results will be declared on Saturday morning.

The 13-member committee comprises two elected students members. Most other members are nominated. The nominated members must include at least seven women.

Six candidates are in the fray for the two seats. Although the election is not contested on the basis of organisations or a candidates political ideology like in the JNU Students’ Union elections held earlier this year, many candidates are supported by organisations within the campus.
