In an age of spy cameras and biometric checks, artist Tensing Joseph raises the issue of privacy in a solo exhibition titled Confidential Reports: The First Blueprints of War. The exhibition is being held at Triveni Kala Sangam till March 25.
Since surveillance is a constant part of our lives, boring into our innermost secrets,I wanted to create a coded symbolism that hints at a new way of communication, says the 48-year-old Kerala born artist who trained in art at Shantiniketan.
These codes emerge as subtle commentaries in Josephs canvases. One such work is a 60×48 inch acrylic on canvas titled Your Dreams May be Disappeared Beyond the Sky. It is a self-portrait in which the artist stands with his back to the audience, holding a violin in his hand and regarding a sleeping lion. The regal animal symbolises imperialism and Joseph points an accusing finger at the State and its growing powers.
In the work, artistic inspiration is symbolised by an egg but one that has been caged. Overhead,a threateningly large aircraft takes off for an unknown destination as the sheets of music kept before the artist disintegrate into the clouds. Joseph seems to suggest that a symphony that could have brought respite to society is now lost.
Other works, too, highlight the constant suppression of creativity. Though some of the works tend to get illustrative,Josephs ability to join the past and present through a constant flow of imagery keeps the viewer interested. Myth and modern technology jostle in the canvases until the dividing lines blur and one wonders,What is myth and what is reality?
