The relevance of Gandhi in the 21st century continues to fuel the imagination of a young director who has chosen to kick-start his career in theatre with an ode to Bapu. Pranay Ahluwalia,27,has produced and directed 90 Minutes for Gandhi, which compares Gandhian ideals and way of life to incidents in contemporary India. Delhi-born Ahluwalia has adapted the play from playwright Partap Sharmas award-winning Sammy, based on Gandhis philosophies. He is staging it for the third time at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival today,an annual arts festival at Edinburgh,UK.
Every nation in our neighbourhood is torn by terrorism, hunger and poverty. Gandhis ideas on non-violence have never been more relevant, says Ahluwalia about his play. After a MBA in the UK,he joined the Holy Cow Performing Arts Group in 2007,a voluntary organisation for theatre lovers in Edinburgh. He had no previous experience of the stage.
The 90-minute play begins with a scene between Gandhi and Jinnah discussing Partition. It traces a jumble of incidents from 1947 and the dynamic new India with all its contradictions. In one of the conversations between Nehru and Gandhi about the need to take up arms against the British,Ahluwalia says he is making a subtle reference to the Mumbai terror attacks. How would Gandhi react to terrorism today? What would be his solution? questions Ahluwalia, who plays Nehru in the play. I think he would have been able to handle it without violence, adds Ahluwalia. The cast of 90 Minutes… are all members of Holy Cow,who are mostly Indians settled in Britain. Formed in late 2007,this play is Holy Cows fourth production. Previously, they have adapted Girish Karnads play Naga Mandala, based on Indian folktales, and Benny Nayarambalams Radhakrishnan. Our group basically explores stories from Indian culture, which are presented to a foreign audience with a fresh perspective. The Fringe gave us that platform, says Ahluwalia, whose next script is about the Mumbai terror attacks.
