A 28-year-old construction worker was electrocuted and another injured when they came in contact with a high-tension wire in southeast Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh.

The incident took place when the two men, identified as Bhura and Intihaar, were working on the roof of an under-construction house, said police. They were working only a few metres away from a 220 kV power line, said police.

“They were laying tiles on the roof. They came in contact with the wire while operating a tiles-cutter machine,” said a police officer. Bhura died on the spot while Intihaar was taken to Safdarjung Hospital.

Local residents said they initially thought a cylinder had burst in the area. “There was a loud sound… when we looked for the source of the sound, we found the two men lying on the roof,” said Mohammed Hafeez, a resident.

A case of criminal negligence has been registered at Jamia Nagar police station.

However, authorities said the power line had been installed in accordance with the law. “People have started encroaching on the land under the power lines. The fact that a 220 kV power line was situated above the balcony of a building reflects utter violation of regulations,” said Rishi Raj Bhati, spokesperson of Delhi Transco Limited. He said the company had issued multiple notices to many such violators.
