Haryana marks smooth polls

Elections to the six Assembly seats in Faridabad district saw 60.83 per cent polling on Tuesday.

Elections to the six Assembly seats in Faridabad district saw 60.83 per cent polling on Tuesday. Generally smooth and peaceful, there were stray complaints about malfunctioning electronic voting machines (EVMs).

Faridabad has six Vidhan Sabha constituencies: Prithla,Faridabad NIT,Badkhal,Ballabhgarh,Faridabad and Tigaon. Sporadic incidents of violence were reported from Tigaon Assembly constituency.

Voters in Sector-2 in Ballabhgarh constituency complained that no measures were taken to provide a separate enclosure for the EVMs,while those at polling booth number 104 in Tigaon complained of poor lighting arrangements.

At another booth in the same constituency,a voting machine went dead and voters said the batteries were replaced after a lot of persuasion.

According to tentative figures received from the district election office,Prithila Assembly constituency recorded the highest turnout: 67 per cent. The lowest turnout was recorded from Ballabhgarh and Faridabad constituencies — 55 per cent each.

Among others,Badkhal recorded 66 per cent polling,Faridabad NIT 65 per cent, and 57 per cent votes were cast in Tigaon.

Poll analysts say the results on October 22 could throw up some surprises, putting some big guns on the mat. Congress’s A C Choudhary, who won the Vidhan Sabha polls on several occasions,is expected to face tough competition from municipal corporation’s Senior Deputy Mayor Shivcharan Lal Sharma and BJP’s Shivraj Lohia in Faridabad seat.
