North Delhi police registered a sexual harassment case against a professor of St Stephen’s College on Thursday night after a PhD student approached police.
Sources said the complaint had been pending with the college’s sexual harassment complaints committee for over a year now. [related-post]
However, college authorities refused to disclose when the complaint was filed. Media adviser Dr Karen Gabriel said, “The complaints committee has to come to a conclusion regarding a case of sexual harassment within three months of the submission of a complaint. But there can be an extension if needed. This complaint was forwarded to the inquiry committee and is nearing completion.”
Police said the student alleged that the professor had sexually harassed her and that the authorities tried to hush up the matter.
“An FIR was registered under Section 354 and other sections of the IPC. No arrests have been made yet,” DCP (North) Madhur Verma said.
