What’s it about?A middle-class Gujarati joint family, that has a tough time making ends meet every month, suddenly comes in possession of Rs 3 crore. How that transforms their financial situation and also alters their personalities forms the core of this interesting storyline. The Mehtas were a perfectly happy lot despite their modest finances—they lived under one roof amicably, but had a common bank account operated by the patriarch of the family and the eldest of the three brothers,Mohanlal. One day,Mohanlal is told that Rs 3 crore has been credited into his account; no one knows how and there are limited attempts to discover the source. However, this also marks the beginning of the endless squabble between the family members over the money. The show takes a humorous look at how the family copes with this latest development.

Who’s in it?Part of the cast, like Bharti Patil,Shyam Pathak,Sanjeev Jotangia and Ketki, seems to have been lifted from NDTV Imagine’s once-upon-a-time show Jasuben Jayantilaal Joshi Ki Joint Family, which might leave an impression that Sukh By Chance is just an extension of the same. The others are an ensemble cast—some new and some seasoned. However, the characters have been cast well,to say the least. For example,Jotangia, who plays Mohanlal, lends the presence and idiosyncrasies to suit his character of a lovable yet strict patriarch.

What’s hot? What strikes you instantly is that the production team has spent no extra time and effort to establish the back story. The crux of the show is to take a look at how the equations change in the family after the money comes in and the producers get to the point directly, which is such a relief. Secondly, the storyline is realistic and characters relatable especially since India is at a stage where new money is altering lifestyles every day. That Sukh By Chance looks at this lightly is a bonus since the storyline has the potential to be explored as a drama as well.

What’s not?Given the principled portrayal of the Mehtas at the start of the show,it is unbelievable that the family doesn’t do all they can to find out the source of the money. That they decide to keep it is another wonder. But this may not seem as unreal given that the family members begin to turn greedy and selfish as the show progresses.

The biggest drawback, however,is that the cast and the backdrop give you a déjà vu of Jasuben Jayantilaal.

Should you be watching it?Sukh By Chance, aired at prime time,no doubt offers an option to introduce rather serious dramas on other channels but whether at all it has the strength to break habits and have people switch the channel to skip their favourite soap will be decided over the course of the next few weeks.
