Gujarat CM Anandiben assures cotton growers of relief

Patel said that government was concerned over what she termed as ‘low’ prices of cotton.

CHIEF MINISTER Anandiben Patel tried to woo farmers on Wednesday by telling them that the state government would see to it that cotton-cultivators of Saurashtra do not suffer due to ‘low’ cotton prices.

Addressing an election rally in Khimrana village of Jamnagar taluka in Jamnagar district, Patel said that government was concerned over what she termed as ‘low’ prices of cotton. She further said that the government will take steps so that cotton-cultivators are not meted out injustice.

The CM went on to add that the government had chalked out a plan to tackle the situation but it could not be announced immediately due to the model code of conduct of election.

Incidentally, Patel had also raised the issue of cotton prices with Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Mohan Kundariya last week. Gujarat is the largest cotton producer in the country. Saurashtra region, including Jamnagar district, is the largest producer of the natural fibre in the state.
