A 26‑year‑old woman, Nikki, was allegedly beaten and set ablaze by her husband, Vipin Bhati, and mother‑in‑law, Daya (55), over ongoing dowry demands on August 21 in Greater Noida. The victim died on the way to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital on August 21 after being transferred from Noida’s Fortis Hospital.
Here are the top five developments from the case:
📌Rohit Bhati (28), Nikki’s brother-in-law, and Satya Veer (55), her father-in-law, were arrested by Kasna Police after days of evading authorities. Both had been on the run since the incident. Now, all four individuals named in the FIR have been taken into custody, including Nikki’s husband, Vipin Bhati (30) and her mother-in-law, Daya (55).
📌 On Thursday, Nikki’s elder sister, Kanchan, who is married to Rohit — Vipin’s elder brother — alleged that around 5.30 pm, her mother-in-law handed over the inflammable substance to Vipin, who poured it over my sister at their home in Sirsa village. Kanchan also took to social media and posted disturbing footages of the incident — one video showed Nikki being dragged by her hair; another captured her engulfed in flames before collapsing.
📌 Vipin Bhati was arrested on Thursday, while his mother Daya, was arrested on Sunday. However, during evidence recovery on Sunday, he snatched a sub-inspector’s pistol and opened fire. Police shot him in the leg in retaliation; he remains in custody under tight security.
📌 The case has drawn widespread attention as Nikki’s family alleged she faced years of torture and escalating dowry demands since her marriage in 2016. They said they had already given a Scorpio SUV, a motorcycle, and gold jewellery to her in-laws, but the demands later increased to Rs 36 lakh in cash and even a luxury car.
📌 The victim’s father, Bhikahri Singh, had said his daughters– Kanchan and Nikki– were married to brothers Rohit Bhati and Vipin Bhati, respectively, in 2016. “Since then, they have been torturing both the daughters and demanding dowry,” he had alleged.
