India made its presence felt on the red carpet at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards.
It was labelled “attention-seeking”, “bizarre” and “over-confident”, but there was no denying that Lady Victoria Hervey’s appearance in a Gaurav Gupta sheer black gown with sequin detailing managed to turn heads at a Golden Globes after-party. The gown, which was the opening ensemble for Gupta’s 2013 Couture collection Lightfall, made quite an impact on the ramp, but wasn’t very well received on the red carpet when donned by the British socialite.
But Gupta’s brush with the Globes glitterati wasn’t the only Indian connection on display at the event. Nepalese-American fashion designer Prabal Gurung, who studied at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi and even assisted Manish Arora, shone bright with his colour-block high-low gown, donned by none other than Gravity star Sandra Bullock, making it to many a Best Dressed list. When it came to the after-party circuit, Bollywood’s very own Priyanka Chopra made an appearance in a full-skirted ensemble by Orissa-born Indian-American designer Bibhu Mohapatra. While it wasn’t the most flattering silhouette or colour for Chopra, we give props to the actor-singer for keeping the Indian connection alive.
