Goel hopes to ride high on state title

Vijay Goel’s win at the Delhi State Snooker Championships in August meant two things for the 35-year-old.

Vijay Goel’s win at the Delhi State Snooker Championships in August meant two things for the 35-year-old. He regained the top spot in Delhi. More importantly, the win gained him an entry into the main rounds of the National Snooker Championships to be held in Pune from September 7. With less than a week to go for the nationals,Goel decided to participate in the National Billiards Championships which were held in Pune. He wanted to get a feel of the tables ahead of the snooker nationals.

He didn’t taste much success and was beaten by the likes of Dhruv Sitwala and Subrit Das. But since he is not a regular billiards player, these defeats were expected.

Goel is looking forward to playing in a tournament, which will feature the likes of Geet Sethi and Pankaj Advani. He is not intimidated by the big names. “I don’t worry about who my opponent is. I concentrate on my game. If I make it to the quarters then I could play against the likes of Geet and Pankaj,” Goel added.

He has left no stone unturned in his quest to keep improving. Being the owner of a pharmaceutical company,Goel is rather well off. He has imported a table from Singapore as he feels that those available in Delhi are of inferior quality. Even while looking after his business interests,Goel finds up to five hours a day for practice.

It is his win over top seed Sandeep Gulati at the state snooker championships, which has prompted Goel to take a closer look at his game. “I am high on confidence after winning the state title,” Goel said.
