The dhoti gets a sleek makeover
The staid dhoti has undergone a chic makeover. The handspun cloth is no longer just the proletariats choice of wrap or the occasional uniform of the politician. Fashion designers and sartorially advanced metropolitan elites have made it a must-have accessory in their closet. Talk checks out dhoti-inspired creations by three designers:
Urvashi Kaur: The Delhi-based designer has brought out a limited edition of dhoti-saris in khadi,fine voile,cotton and hand woven chanderi. The monochromatic palette includes ivories and whites. Also watch out for the dhoti pants,shalwars and jumpsuits. It is a great way to revive,retain and boost the textile industry,says Kaur.

Jyotee Khaitan: The Kolkata-based designer has churned out ochre-yellow dhoti-inspired kurtas,skirts and tops. Its a khadi-inspired collection,but I have experimented with the colour palette, says the designer.

Ritu Kumar: The grand dame of fashion has had many run-ins with khadi and dhoti. Check out the limited edition collection of Bhawani dhoti suits in khadi,which are high on her trademark zardozi embellishments.
