Games projects win construction awards

The two projects facing flak from the audit teams — the Barapullah Elevated Corridor and Thyagraj Stadium

The two projects facing flak from the audit teams — the Barapullah Elevated Corridor and Thyagraj Stadium — have won the third Construction Industry Development Council (Vishwakarma) Award.

The Council is a semi-government body that works under the Planning Commission. The Vishwakarma award is the highest in the construction industry. The awards will be handed out on Monday.

The Thyagraj Stadium has won under the social infrastructure category and the Barapullah Corridor has won under road infrastructure category.

This is the third recognition for Thyagraj Stadium — it earlier won the Indian Building Congress award for excellence in built environment and the Best Building of the CPWD.

“It is the only stadium constructed from the scratch and is a green building. A lot of thought and effort has gone into building it,” said project manager Anil Pandit. Spread over an area of 16.5 acres, the building has water harvesting and sewage treatment systems, and solar power generation units. The stadium has been constructed using fly ash bricks.

The 4.3-km Barapullah Corridor, meanwhile, was constructed in a record time of two years.

“Usually a project of this scale takes nearly three years for construction alone, but we constructed Barapullah in two years, including the time for planning,” said Sarvagya Srivastav, project manager.
