Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday met Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung to speak about launching a project for cleaning the Yamuna.
Gadkari and Jung discussed measures to launch the project that would involve different ministries including Road Transport, Highways and Shipping, Water Resources and Environment and Forests besides Delhi government departments, an official said. A special cell is also likely to be created in Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Ministry for the purpose, the official said.
During the meeting, Gadkari and Jung also expressed concern over the rise in road accidents.
Meanwhile, L-G Jung approved the formation of district-level road safety committees in Delhi under the provision of section 215 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. These committees will “ensure a closer engagement between the local administration and the citizen on the issue of road safety”, officials said.
According to a notification signed by special commissioner (Transport) Kuldeep Singh Gangar, these committees will be chaired by the respective district magistrates. Members will include the district’s Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP (Traffic), superintending engineer (PWD), superintending engineer (MCD/NDMC), superintending engineer (DDA), additional CDMO (Health), deputy director (Education), motor licensing officer and the additional district magistrate.
One of the foremost functions of these committees will be to identify existing and potential black spots in the city and plan remedial measures. “The measures could include spreading awareness, improving the road condition, enforcement and provision of emergency medical relief in case of accidents,” the official said.
The committee would also look into the deployment of ambulances; development of trauma care centres…”, the official said.
