Observing that a harsher sentence would leave a bad impression on the in-laws of his daughter, who married recently,a CBI court sentenced a 63-year-old former Income Tax inspector to three years in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him for extorting money from a jeweller in Karol Bagh in 2006.
Special CBI Judge Pradeep Chaddah sentenced S K Chopra, who worked as an Income Tax inspector at the time, for conspiring with a senior I-T officer, who has since died,to extort money from a jeweller and for taking Rs 50,000 as the first installment of the bribe amount.
The two officers, along with a third inspector, had raided the shop of Ramesh Chopra in Beadonpura,Karol Bagh,on January 20,2006,to verify the stock of jewellery.
The court was told that instead of checking the stock, the senior officer forced Ramesh to sign a blank form and demanded Rs 25 lakh as bribe. The officer also threatened to implicate the jeweller in a false I-T case and get his shop sealed.
The team agreed to take Rs 2.5 lakh when Ramesh said that he would not be able to pay such a large sum at short notice. Chopra was arrested by the CBI when he came to collect Rs 50,000 more from Rameshs son Varun.
Investigation revealed that the inspectors were had not been authorised to visit Rameshs shop, but had to raid another jewellery shop, with a similar name,in the same market.
