A 33-year-old former ad-hoc teacher from Delhi University allegedly committed suicide at his Rani Bagh home Wednesday.

The victim, Samarveer, used to teach philosophy at Hindu College and lost his job in April when interviews for permanent positions were held. His family alleged he was upset after being removed from the job, said police, adding that no foul play has been detected yet.

A PCR call was made about the incident late on Wednesday and police reached Samarveer’s flat. “The top floor of his house has two rooms, one of them was locked. First, the mesh of the iron door was cut and then the wooden door was broken. We took him to MV Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival,” DCP (Outer) Harendra K Singh said.

“On enquiry, his cousin revealed that the deceased was working as an ad-hoc lecturer at Hindu College. Recently, another lecturer was appointed in his place. He was upset over this…,” the DCP added. Police said no FIR has been registered yet. His family has not raised any allegations.

Samarveer, who hailed from Bara, Rajasthan, had studied at Hindu College. He had enrolled at JNU for a PhD. Police said he is survived by his parents and a younger sister.

Recounting the incident, Samarveer’s cousin Rahul said, “I was outside when it happened. When I got back home, I saw his doors were locked. I called him several times but there was no response… I peeped through the window and saw him hanging.”

He claimed: “Samarveer was disappointed when he lost the job. He tried some work at Gargi College and went for an interview at Hindu but was not accepted… He was worried about getting a job and supporting his family. He had been teaching for 5-6 years.”

DU Registrar Vikas Gupta said: “He (Samarveer) was not an ad hoc professor on date. He was an ad hoc professor earlier at Hindu College but when the permanent selection happened, he was not selected.”

On Thursday, students and teachers protested at DU’s North Campus, saying ad hoc lecturers, who have been teaching for several years, should be given preference during hiring.

For the past few months, DU has been hiring permanent tea-chers in place of ad hoc staff. In Ja-nuary, former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia had written to the DU V- C over alleged displacement of over 70% of ad hoc teachers and asked for their absorption and/or recruitment as permanent staff.
