Foreign language courses high in popularity

“Learning a foreign language ensures immediate jobs and opens up multiple avenues internationally,” says Vibha Maurya, head of the department of Germanic and Romance Studies,Delhi University. The department gets an average of 3,000 applications every year for the BA (Hons) courses in French,Italian,German and Spanish.

The selection criteria comprises a score of 70 per cent in CBSE Boards coupled with 30 per cent marks in the General Aptitude Test (GAT) scheduled for June 17.

The test is exclusively designed for the students seeking admission in foreign language courses,to assess their language and logical skills in either Hindi or English. Besides learning a new language, the student also studies concurrent subjects such as environmental issues, gender and society, etc which are compulsory for a BA (Hons) degree.

For applying to these courses, application forms need to be filled up and submitted at the Arts Faculty, unlike other courses for which common admission forms need to be filled. The department also has tie-ups and MoUs with European universities and also provides scholarships and cultural exchanges every year.

“We have an excellent scholarship programme and every year five to six students are given opportunities to go abroad and pursue further studies in the language” Maurya says.

Erasmus Mundo is one such scholarship in partnership with the European Union, which sends students for master programmes to the country of the language studied.

The faculty for all four languages taught at UG level includes guest faculty who visit the campus during cultural exchange programmes and teach the students. There are 39 seats in every language, reservations included.

“We do not follow the semester system as we seek to increase the level of proficiency among the students — a semester system brings in time constraints,” a faculty member of Spanish said. The job opportunities on the completion of the course are diverse. It opens up employment opportunities in the field of interpretation, translation, tourism as well as in BPOs,MNCs and international banks.

The department is also mulling a certificate and master level course in Portuguese from July.
