The next time you see a flashy advertisement guaranteeing a job abroad with a very high salary,think twice before investing in it. The Crime Branch of Delhi Police has arrested a man who lured thousands of people and cheated them of lakhs of rupees on the pretext of providing them a Canadian visa.
The accused,identified as Surinder Singh,would post advertisements on classifieds website olx.in to lure those seeking jobs abroad.
In one of the cases filed against him,the accused cheated a Tamil Nadu-based engineer who had approached him after reading an advertisement on the website.
One Shameer Jan,a Tamil Nadu-based hardware networking service engineer,filed a complaint stating that he was in search of a job abroad and had been cheated of Rs 62,000 by one Surinder Singh who posted an advertisement on olx.in,with the title Job in Canada, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav said.
Jan alleged that Singh lured him by conveying that he had been shortlisted for a job in Hilton Garden Inn in Toronto,Canada for a salary of 2,000 Canadian dollars per month and provided him with a scanned copy of the fake job offer letter and a visa, Additional CP Yadav further said.
However,the complainant approached the Canadian Embassy in the capital to verify the visa. It was found to be fake. A case of forgery was then registered based on the complaint of the victim,police said. A team of police officers then laid a trap and Singh was arrested in South Delhi, police said.
During questioning,Singh told police that he was from Punjab and had a diploma in Radiology. Singh started his career as a Technician Radiographer and worked in different private hospitals in Ludhiana,but left for Mumbai to earn more. He could not get a good job and did odd jobs in Film City,police said. Singh also worked as an assistant director for a Punjabi film.
He worked with the casting crew for a popular big-budget TV serial. In 2008,he came to Chandigarh and started shooting Punjabi music videos with well-known singers. In 2010,he returned to Mumbai and opened his office in Lokhandwala for a firm involved in casting. He extended his work as far as Goa, a police officer said.
He then came in contact with one Qureshi from Mumbai,who used to cheat people on the pretext of providing Canadian visa,police said. The accused Surinder Singh got inspired from him and uploaded a phone number with the name of a fake company Hams Enterprise on http://www.olx.in, an officer said. An investigation to ascertain how many people he cheated using the same modus operandi is underway,police said.
