The Gautam Buddha Nagar police have dismantled a call centre operation in Noida, which was allegedly involved in swindling people in the name of quick bank loan processing, insurance policy renewal, policy mortgage loans, and insurance plans, officials said.

A team of Cyber helpline and local police Tuesday arrested 14 people, including six women, in the Phase-1 police station area. They are suspected to be the key participants in the operation that siphoned off over Rs 50 lakh from unsuspecting victims, officials said on Thursday.

According to investigators, thousands of people have fallen victim to the nefarious scheme over the past five years, with each operator making up to 50 fraudulent calls daily.

“The mastermind, identified as Haseen, was responsible for orchestrating the theft of personal data from his previous employers, compromising the privacy of more than 10,000 individuals. The stolen data includes phone numbers, names, insurance policy history, and policy numbers, as well as detailed records of policy installment amounts,” said Shakti Mohan Avasthy, Additional DCP of Noida.

He said law enforcement officials successfully recovered 11 lakh in cash and 10 mobile phones, which were believed to be crucial in their operation, from the crime scene. The confiscation of these assets will aid in further investigations and asset recovery for the victims.

The accused face charges under sections 420 (cheating), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 66 of Information Technology (Amendments) Act, 2008.
