Electronic music acts prepare to up the ante at the Global Groove festival
Music maniacs have a fun weekend coming up. Twenty-seven electronic music acts will meet in Delhi on December 19 and 20 as part of the Global Groove festival. For fans who track the latest electro experiments only on the Net,heres a chance to catch live acts, such as Mimetic from Switzerland, whose music includes the latest in sound technology; Ada from Cologne,Germany, with her list of danceable tracks that unite melancholic profundity with the weird art of sawing; and Berlin-based Bobby and Blumm who specialise in giving pop music an electronic punch.
Amit Saigal of Entertainment Media Services, which is organising the fest along with Max Mueller Bhavan, says the stress is on highlighting the wide variety of electronic music: The Delhi band Da Saz,for instance, mixes Bulleh Shahs poems and folk in their music, while Chennai-based Kartick and Gotam unite Israeli and Carnatic influences and even have a Bharatnatyam dancer on stage.
Global Groove will feature 10 international acts while the Indian contingent will comprise 17 bands, including Midival Punditz from Delhi,Shaair and Func from Mumbai and Tempo Tantrick from Bangalore.
Jerome Soudan of Mimetic says,I do my best to show that electronic music is not party music. For me,it is part of a cultural movement that began at the end of the 19th century with the invention of photography. When we take a picture,we steal a piece of time. A lot of musicians nowadays take samples of sound and compose tracks with that. In my case, these tracks reflect the rhythm of life,of cities.
For Suchet Malhotra of Da Saz,the best bit is the impromptu act that electronic encourages. The performances are new even to us. We put the music through the groove and top it up with some new beat or vocal. Its a brand new track every time, says the percussionist, who will also perform solo in a show called Stories through Sounds where he will play more than 30 instruments.
On December 17 and 18,there will be a convention for performers and industry experts such as Ralph Christoph,a music festival professional from Germany who is also co-curating Global Groove,Ralg Marzillier from Full Moon Festival,Dhruv Jagasia, manager of Midival Punditz and Jehan Johar from Blue Frog, among others.
