A day after a 19-year-old Delhi University (DU) student accused three men of throwing acid on her, her father was arrested on Monday in a rape case . None of the three men, including the neighbour who was the main accused, were at the site of the incident in Northwest Delhi on Sunday where the DU student claimed that she was attacked, said police.

“The father of the girl has been tracked and arrested in a rape case,” Special CP (Law and Order) Ravindra Yadav said. Police said he admitted to falsely accusing his neighbour of the involvement in the acid attack. A police officer said that the father said his daughter was carrying toilet cleaner from home. She poured it on her hands herself, a police official said.

“The main accused in the acid attack was in another area in New Delhi since Sunday morning. This has been confirmed by analysing call detail records, CCTV footage, and witness statements. The motorcycle, which the complainant said was used in the attack, was also in the same area throughout the day.”

Police also said the wife of the woman’s neighbour had earlier filed a sexual assault and harassment complaint against her father. She claimed that the man had allegedly forced her into a sexual relationship while she was employed at his factory in Northwest Delhi.

“The woman alleged that while working in his factory for three years between 2021 and 2024, he sexually harassed her, forcibly established physical relations, and blackmailed her with objectionable photos and videos. On her complaint, a case has been registered,” Special CP Yadav said. The teen’s father has been arrested in this case, he added.

On Sunday, DCP (North West) Bhisham Singh said that the police were told that a 19-year-old was admitted with acid burn injuries.

The police were told by the teen that she was walking towards a college where she was taking extra classes when the attack took place. “She said that she had gone to this college to attend extra classes. While she was walking towards the college, her neighbour, along with two aides, came on a motorcycle, according to her. One of the accomplices then threw acid on her. She claimed she sustained injuries on both hands amid a bid to protect her face. The three men, she said, had then fled the spot,” the police had said.

Police said that both the other two men accused of throwing acid are in Agra with their mother, who was allegedly attacked with acid by the relatives of the 19-year-old. CCTV also proved that none of these men were at the site of the incident, said officers.

“The mother of the two men has informed that she herself was a victim of an acid attack in 2018, allegedly by relatives of this woman. She also mentioned that a property dispute exists. The case is under trial,” Special CP Yadav said.

“CCTV footage recovered so far shows the complainant leaving her home on a scooty driven by her brother, who dropped her near the college. She was later seen travelling further in an e-rickshaw. The reason why her brother did not drop her at the college gate after driving her all the way from home is being examined,” Special CP Yadav said. The victim’s brother, a police officer claimed, is refusing to join the investigation.

The police are now verifying the authenticity of the FIR, the allegations of the complainant, and the defense of the accused persons.
