A candlelight vigil was held at Jantar Mantar on Wednesday evening, seeking speedy passage of the Disability Rights Bill in the current session of Parliament.
The Disability Rights Group, which staged a dharna and organised a vigil, said it was mounting pressure on the government and the Opposition to attain “the rights for India’s 70 million disabled citizens”.
“The future of millions of disabled citizens depends on the tabling and the passage of the new Disability Rights Bill. The new law will ensure absolutely basic but necessary provisions like universalisation of the disability certificate. It will also ensure recognition and inclusion of many other neglected disabilities like dyslexia, haemophilia, thalassemia,” Javed Abidi, convenor of the DRG, said.
“Disability was never a political issue. Even now, in the heat of the upcoming general elections, it should strictly remain a non-political issue. We want to meet different political parties and receive assurance from them that they will not make disability a political matter and support the cause by ensuring the smooth passage of the first rights-based disability Bill that this country will have,” Abidi said.
The DRG demanded that the government bring the Bill to Parliament and ensure that it gets tabled. It called upon the Opposition to “please support the Bill and help us in getting it passed”.
