Almost three years after the Valiathan committee (constituted to look into the functioning of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences) submitted its report,it is likely to be considered for implementation.

The discussion on this will be held during the general body meeting of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) scheduled for tomorrow.

Calling it “impractical” for the health minister to preside over one institution, the report had suggested the IIT model should be followed and the minister may preside over a joint council of AIIMS,PGI and other such institutions.

The four-member committee headed by M S Valiathan, former head of Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Kerala was constituted in July 2006 after a war of words between the then health minister Anbumani Ramadoss and the then AIIMS director P Venugopal.

Dr Manoj Singh, president of faculty association of AIIMS said: “We are not happy as the faculty has not been involved in any of the decisions. In fact we haven’t yet been invited for this meet.”
