Dinesh Singh,former director of Delhi Universitys South Campus,was appointed as its 21st Vice-Chancellor on Friday.
He took over in the afternoon of the same day the Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA),which had been on a strike since Monday,withdrew it in its general body meeting. I extend my hand to all sections of the university community in the spirit of cooperation,and will work for the betterment of the university,especially the students, Singh said.
Singh succeeds Deepak Pental,who will vacate his post as one of the most controversial V-Cs of DU. Pental will return to his lab in South Campus to continue his work on transgenic seeds.
Of late,Singh was officiating as the DU Pro Vice-Chancellor. A mathematician of repute,he is an alumnus of St Stephens College. He also began his career as a teacher at Stephens. He has had stints at IIT-Delhi and the Indian Statistical Institute. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Mathematics at the University of Houston.
