Delhi underground

Cobalt quibble
In any conversation nowadays, the ‘C’ word instantly draws attention — it does not matter then if the ‘C’ is merely elementary Cobalt and not the radioactive isotope,Cobalt-60. At a recent meeting organised by the Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research to discuss the presence of heavy metals in cosmetics above the permissible limits,Director Prof S S Agrawal tried to impress on the members that while his team had found inordinate level of Cobalt in cosmetic samples in 2008-09,they found only lead and arsenic in batches tested in 2009-10. The mention of Cobalt, however, made every other heavy metal seem insignificant. Even as Prof Agrawal tried to explain the difference between elementary Cobalt and the ‘radioactive’ Cobalt-60,not many were interested. Question pertaining to the dangers of a radioactive lipstick was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Agrawal merely read out from a prepared statement from then on.

Pressed for time
The state authorities have decided to skip the interview round for the 6,000 constables, who are to join the police force for the Commonwealth Games. The written test was conducted a few weeks ago and the interviews have been given a miss as the authorities want the constables should be inducted and ready before the Games begin.

Gotcha!
Personal summon issued for Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to take cognizance of several cases against her,by the Lokayukta Justice M M Sarin may now leave the judge red-faced. For more than six months, the Lokayukta office has been planning a national seminar of Lokayuktas. Justice Sarin has even invited the Union Law minister and Lokayukts of other states. The CM’s office, however, has rejected the request for the seminar twice already. Reason: the Delhi administration is busy in the Commonwealth Games preparation and cannot spare time or funds for the seminar.

CM in a Hurry
Children waited for more than an hour, flowers in hand,to welcome Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit at the launch of a report on ‘Psycho-physical requirement and medical crisis management mechanism in schools’ by the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights. The chief minister, however, seemed to be in a hurry to leave. “Chaliye madam jaldi,” Dikshit was heard saying. The remark drew muffled laughter from the students waiting to welcome her. “I am in a bit of a hurry,” she repeated when the Commission chairperson Amod Kanth started giving details of the study.

Doc’s got the last word
When the doctors advised ‘rest’ for the Delhi Metro chief E Sreedharan, who had recently undergone a heart surgery, the Ministry of Urban Development ensured that all the yes-people had restricted access to him. Word is that a letter from the UD ministry has asked the DMRC officials to “not disturb” Sreedharan — a move that probably aims to nip any efforts to ‘impress’,and thereby disturb, the chief by calling on him while he recuperates.

Of interest to who?
At the Delhi High Court, public interest litigations at times appear to be lacking any noticeable concern. Last week,a petitioner filed a PIL to know who fixed the prices of petrol, diesel and other petro products: Union or the state government. Irked,Acting Chief Justice Madan B Lokur first grilled the petitioner on how this could be the subject of a PIL and then threw out the petition stating the matter “hardly’ required a PIL.

Power and money
While Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit believes that Delhiites are rich enough to absorb an increase in tariff, officials in the Power department are feeling jittery in case a raise in tariff is announced. A senior official in the Power department said when the government withdrew the 10 per cent subsidy for power in 2009,many viewed it as an increase in price. “Another hike may not go down so well with the public. We’ll have to watch the situation very carefully,” he said nervously.
