The Delhi University plans to collect data on the drop-out rate among under-graduate students admitted in the SC/ST quota in a bid to bring it down. The drop-out rate of students admitted in the quota is as high as 70 per cent in some courses,said a retired official at the University’s Student Welfare office. Students,especially from economically and socially disadvantaged sections,find it difficult to cope with the demands of Honours courses. While physically handicapped students are counselled extensively during registrations,the same is not the case with SC/ST students.

CMRS too busy for Airport Metro line?

While Reliance Infrastructure,operator of the Airport Metro Express Line,has been planning a grand inaugural ceremony at the hands of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh,the two pending stations at Aerocity and Dhaula Kuan seem to have no prospects of being commissioned anytime soon. Though the application has been lying with the Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety for the last three months,and was deemed incomplete,it has been reworked and sent back to the CMRS. However,an inspection date is yet to be fixed due to his packed schedule.

1 health programme,inaugurated twice

The Delhi government launched a screening programme for diabetes and hypertension for the second time at the hands of Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit with much fanfare on June 28. In October last year,Azad had announced the same programme under his pet project— the National Urban Health Mission by the chief ministers of Delhi,Maharashtra,Andhra Pradesh,Karnataka,West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. According to an official,“Ever since Dr A K Walia took over as health minister,he doubled efforts and so there is no harm in a second inauguration.”

No invite for JP to Aggarwal Sammelan

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit inaugurated the Aggarwal Maha Sammelan recently. However,conspicuous by his absence was J P Aggarwal,Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee President and the face of the Aggarwal community for the party. Even though differences between Dikshit and Aggarwal are known to all,sources said Aggarwal was sulking as he was not invited. However,when asked to comment,he replied that the Delhi Congress had no role to play in the event as it was organised by BJP.

Sometimes,dogs are not a cop’s best friend

At times,police face resistance not only from criminals but their dogs too. A Delhi Crime Branch team recently faced such a situation when it raided the farmhouse of a suspended junior engineer of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi in Vasant Kunj area on a tip-off that he was sheltering criminals. As soon as the dogs saw the policemen in the compound,they attacked them. The police had to lock up the dogs in one of the rooms before they could make arrests and search the premises. Well,the story ended with the cops unearthing the gangsters as well as a large cache of sophisticated weapons .

CISF wet blanket over Customs press meet

When the Customs department at the IGI airport decided to hold a press conference at T3,they faced stiff resistance from CISF personnel,who handle security inside the building. The customs had seized a huge consignment of heroin and wanted to showcase it to the media at T3’s swanky conference hall. Not charmed with this request,CISF denied them permission to hold the media briefing,forcing the customs to shift the venue to New Customs House.

MCG,HUDA vow to dry roads drown in rain

Despite tall claims made by the Municipal Council of Gurgaon (MCG) and HUDA,traffic continued to be nightmarish on city roads a few hours after the rains. Although both the agencies claimed to have spent a lot of money on desilting drains and installing pumps to flush out water,traffic remained clogged for hours on the main thoroughfares. Construction work on Rapid Metro and encroachments only added to the mess.
