Pick and choose
It seems Gurgaons anti-encroachment drive is not all inclusive. For,after the civic agencies launched a drive to remove encroachment from around Rajiv Chowk on National Highway 8,a liquor shop still stands on the greenbelt amid the debris of other demolished eateries and kiosks. In a similar drive, after repeated complaints from the residents,District Town Planner (Enforcement) sealed a few of liquor vends on Mehrauli-Gurgaon border earlier this week. Within few hours, however, the DTP was summoned by the Municipal Commissioner of Gurgaon and the sealed shops were back in business soon after.
Wrong address
After the Dantewada tragedy on Tuesday, the CRPF got the address of a slain constable,Ali Hassan, wrong. While Hassan was a resident of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, the CRPF listed him as a resident of Seelampur in Delhi. The police and the media flocked to the address in Seelampur looking for Hassans relatives, only to find that no one by that name lived in the area. The address,in fact, was of CISF Head Constable Zahid Hussain, who pleaded the authorities to rectify the mistake as his relatives were worried that something had happened to him.
Waste of effort
Residents believe the New Delhi Municipal Councils garbage segregation system is a waste. Their reason: despite their efforts to dispose degradable and non-degradable garbage in different colour bins,it eventually ends up in one container. When the NDMC garbage collectors come in the morning, the garbage from both the bins is dumped in one single container mixing the two, a resident said. Now,the residents have also stopped segregating the garbage as they believe in the end it is just one big mess.
Snapshots
Four days after an RTI was filed seeking details about pictures of which personalities adorn the walls at the offices of Delhi ministers,Chief Minister Sheila Dikshits portrait was put up on a wall of Finance Minister Dr A K Walias room. The rumour goes that Dikshit herself had informally sent her portraits to all head of departments but not many have actually put them up. At Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehtas room,Dikshits portrait has been lying unattended in a corner for the past fortnight.
Unfair cops
When Senior Superintendent of Police (Ghaziabad) Raghubir Lals team won the tug-of-war competition arranged by the Ghaziabad police chief with an aim to keep the officers fit,the losing team alleged that Lal had used unfair means. When the SSP Ghaziabad started losing,a senior officer signaled three policemen to join the team. Raghubir won but the strength was 21 against 18, an officer said.
Missing monuments
According to the new amendment in the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act 1958,construction within a protected area (100 metres around a monument) is not permitted. Now,this amendment has left the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) officials with some unique problems. One of them being, regarding ASI protected monuments have gone missing while the structure finds mention in ASI record books,it has in reality been wiped out. Officials are wondering how to measure the protected area limits of such a monument.

At a recent press conference addressed by Imran Malik,brother-in-law of Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik, tempers ran high. Malik was clearly at the end of his wits when a reporter asked him to comment on Sarfraz Nawazs allegation that Shoaib will start betting after his marriage to Sania Mirza. He can say whatever he likes, you can say whatever you like and there are millions of people in Pakistan and they can say whatever they like. I am not going to answer all of them and how on earth is Sarfraz related to this issue, Malik asked. The answer left the reporter visibly irritated, but he chose to keep quiet.
