To ensure safety of pedestrians, the Public Works Department (PWD) is planning to construct a skywalk at the infamous Madhuban Chowk in North West Delhi.

Madhuban Chowk, one of the busiest intersections that witnesses heavy traffic, is also one of the top 10 blackspots – that are accident-prone – in the Capital. The area is surrounded by Rohini court, Pitampura market and a mall, witnessing heavy footfall of pedestrians as well vehicles.

Officials said that earlier, the PWD had a plan to construct a 800-m-long foot over bridge connecting the two Metro corridors of Pitampura. However, it is now planning to construct a skywalk at Madhuban Chowk, connecting Rohini court directly with Pitampura Metro station of Red Line while another arm of the skywalk will connect to the upcoming station between Janakpuri West and R K Ashram on the Pink Line.

“The estimated cost of this skywalk is Rs 17.5 crore. A proposal, stating that PWD will hand over the project to DMRC, as it is already working on Phase IV of the Metro line in the area, has been sent to the minister for approval… The PWD will give DMRC the budget for the construction,” said an official.

“The skywalk will be constructed in three parts. One part will connect the two Metro stations, another part will end near Rohini court, and the third part will connect the road junction leading to Prashant Vihar and Wazirpur,” the official added.

Between 2020 and 2023, a significant number of accidents had occurred at this spot, which witnesses around 10 fatalities annually, said officials.

If the project takes off, this will be Delhi’s third skywalk. The first skywalk was constructed at ITO, connecting Tilak Marg, Pragati Maidan and Supreme Court Metro station. The second one is located in South Campus.
