Delhi Assembly elections: More than 1,000 Model Code of Conduct violation cases lodged, say police

Between January 7 and February 3, 1,076 cases were registered for violating MCC, the Delhi Police said in a statement.

More than 1,000 cases of alleged Model Code of Conduct (MCC) violations have been lodged since the Delhi Assembly elections were announced on January 7, the Delhi Police said on Tuesday.

The cases were lodged at various police stations across the city, on several charges, including distribution of gifts to voters, spreading misinformation, assault, etc.

According to the Delhi Police, between January 7 and February 3, 1,076 cases were registered for MCC violations and 34,250 people were arrested under various legal provisions.

The police said in a statement that 491 people were arrested for possessing illegal firearms and 469 unlicenced weapons and 513 cartridges were recovered from them.

“At least 1,381 people were arrested for possession of 1,10,093 litres of illegal liquor,” the police said in a statement. The police added that 177 people were arrested in drug seizure cases and 196 kg of illegal drugs valued at more than Rs 77.9 crore and 1,200 injections were seized.

The police also seized Rs 11,36,55,697 in cash and recovered 0.850 kg gold and 37.39 kg silver during this period, the statement added.

The Delhi elections will be held on Wednesday and results will be announced on Saturday.
