Come March and Alliance Francaise is set to celebrate the annual Francophonie Week through a series of performances, conferences and a mela. Mithushi Khurana, culture head,Alliance Francaise, says,This is the first time that the festival is week-long,as opposed to the four-day programme held annually. We are excited about the closing concerts featuring Indian band Then and Now and French band Lo Griyo. We present the highlights.
Lo and Behold
Lo Griyo, the band from Reunion Island in France, has been influenced by the sounds of Tamil,Gujarati,Malagasy and European immigrants in the islands. Its multi-instrumentalist Sami Pageaux Waro represents the new generation of griot (which,in Creole, means the transmitter, the keeper of oral tradition). He is accompanied by Luc Joly,a multi-blower (sax tenor, clarinet contre-alto and flutes),and sound designer Brice Nauroy. They create future trance, maloya and world music.
Lo Griyo will perform with Delhi-based band,Then and Now,the winner of Faites de la Musique 2013,organised by Alliance Francaise de Delhi. With songwriters Abhishek Joshi and Kshitij Bhargava, along with Pawan Anand and Deepak Garg on the bass and drums respectively, the band creates more than just popular music.
In collaboration with Institut Francais en Inde and the French Embassy, and under the flagship of Bonjour India Festival, the concert is on March 23 at 6.30 pm.
Fun Fair
Before it becomes to hot to step out, catch the Francophonie Mela this Friday. Film screenings, art exhibitions, musical and theatre performances will be on from 11 am to 7 pm,at the culmination day of the Francophonie Week. Stalls will be set up across the area, introducing visitors to the different Francophone countries through their food and culture.
Whiskey Lullaby
If you missed Sylvie Bourbans performance at the Jazz Fest last weekend, you have another chance. Switzerland-based Bourban and Mattias Windemo from Sweden will perform on March 22 at 7 pm.
