CST-Qutab Minar corridor to link Gurgaon in two weeks

The completely underground Central Secretariat-Qutab Minar Metro corridor will spring a few surprises for commuters as the Delhi Metro gives finishing touches to the line.

The completely underground Central Secretariat-Qutab Minar Metro corridor will spring a few surprises for commuters as the Delhi Metro gives finishing touches to the line. Over the next week, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will complete the installation of entry/exit signages and canopies for escalators for the underground stations.

The opening of the line is scheduled in another two weeks’ time. According to sources in the DMRC,a few documents have already been sent to the Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) for initial checks. “Though the CMRS is yet to be formally invited for the final inspection, the process has been initiated. We should be able to commission the line in another two weeks,” said a DMRC spokesperson.

Over the next week, the underground stations, which were so far concealed by barricades, will be opened up and landscaping of areas around the entry and exit points will be completed. Metro officials said. “As the entire stretch is underground, people have not been able to see the activity going on,unlike the elevated stretches where the progress of construction is constantly noticed.”

The 12.53-km stretch from Central Secretariat to Qutab Minar is considered an important link to Metro’s Line II,which upon completion will run a 45-km distance from Jahangirpuri in North Delhi to HUDA City Centre in Gurgaon.

Officials said trial runs are nearly complete and the integration of operations with the rest of the stretch, from Qutab Minar to HUDA City Centre on one end and from Central Sectretariat to Jahangirpuri on the other, has also been done.

“Around 22 trains run on Line II at present, but once it is completely linked we will have around 40 trains pressed into service. The fleet could go up to 60 trains with a frequency of 3 minutes by the Commonwealth Games,” said the spokesperson.
