Couture Coup

The Couture Week comes to Delhi

The Capital’s answer to Mumbai’s vaulting fashion status would swish down the runway in July: the Couture Week, which will be on from July 20 to 25 at the Grand hotel in Vasant Kunj. After two editions of the HDIL India Couture Week unfurled in Mumbai, the Fashion Design Council of India took over the reins and is bringing the show to Delhi.

It is yet another addition to Delhi’s growing list of fashion weeks but this one will flaunt an elite minority — just 12 designers. They include the whimsical Rohit Bal,Mumbai boy Sabyasachi Mukherjee and rising stars Pallavi Jaikishan and Gaurav Gupta who would unfurl their dresses in silk, satin and lace.

“This will be Delhi’s biggest extravaganza in terms of creativity. It will be the event of the decade,” gushed Sunil Sethi, president of the FDCI. When asked about the participation fee for the designers,Sethi said,“Couture is very expensive. The designers will spend huge amounts on the set, music and the collection itself. We are not charging them anything.” The models will walk down an opulent runway created by set designer Sumant Jayakrishnan.

Meanwhile, giving the week a miss are top-of-the-heap designers Tarun Tahiliani and Ritu Kumar. Tahiliani is mounting the bridal exposition — a gala event (perhaps scaled up this year to shrewdly rival the Couture Week) that will open at DLF Emporio on July 22 — and Kumar is set to participate in the India-Spain Fashion Meeting.

Yet,the fun hasn’t dissipated, says designer JJ Valaya, kitted in his trademark kurta. “There are so many designers with their specific signatures and there will be a lot of variety,” he said.
