Course correction after third DU list

The third cut-off list was released to the press late on Saturday, with Delhi University colleges fast closing their seats.

SRCC re-opens admission to B Com (H) Economics, seats also available at Hans Raj College,Sri Venkateswara

The third cut-off list was released to the press late on Saturday, with Delhi University colleges fast closing their seats. Shri Ram College of Commerce, which had almost closed admissions after first list, however, became one of the few welcoming students again.

SRCC re-opened its admissions to the BA (Hons) Economics course,to which admissions had closed in the second cut-off list. The college has brought down the cut-off mark for the course by 0.25 percentage in the unreserved category,to 95.

The fact that SRCC re-opened admission, seems to be a ripple effect starting from St Stephen’s College releasing its list of selected students to BA (Hons) Economics last week. It was expected that students who had already taken admissions at SRCC would move to St Stephen’s once its list was out.

In other colleges, meanwhile,Economics seats are closing fast: 25 of the 35 colleges that offer the course have closed admissions. Apart from SRCC,colleges like Hans Raj and Sri Venkateswara are still offering admissions to the Economics course. On the other hand, only five colleges have closed admissions in the OBC category.

Admissions to B Com (Hons) have closed in 39 of the 55 colleges that offer the course. For B Com,only 17 of the 44 colleges have closed admissions. The OBC seats are open nearly in all colleges — only five colleges have closed admissions to B Com (Hons) and three to B Com.

Due to a cautious approach that has seen colleges peg cut-offs high, those admitting students as per the scores of the Combined Aptitude Test in English have recorded at slow admission rate. Only 14 of the 21 CATE colleges have closed admissions to BA (Hons) English. In contrast,21 of the 24 colleges that admit students based on the marks of their school-leaving exams have closed admissions.

Sciences continue to defy popular perceptions. For instance, the OBC admission to the University’s Science courses are comparable to admissions in the unreserved category.

In BSc (Hons) Physics, for instance, while 16 of the 21 colleges have closed unreserved category admissions,12 have also closed OBC admissions. A similar trend is seen in Chemistry, where 16 of the 19 colleges have closed unreserved category admissions, while 10 have closed OBC admissions. In Botany,8 of the 17 colleges offering the course have closed unreserved category admissions and seven have also closed OBC admissions.

The list has also been uploaded at the University website,du.ac.in. Admissions will begin on Tuesday and go on till July 1. There will be two more lists,on July 2 and 8.
