A former crime reporter and his wife,a former airhostess, have been arrested by the Delhi Police Crime Branch for allegedly cheating job seekers.

According to the police, the couple would use websites like Naukri.com to find data on people looking for employment. They would then contact the victims offering them jobs in multi-national companies and once a person agreed to take up a job,the couple would ask him or her to deposit money in fake bank accounts opened by them.

The police said Jhanvi,21,would call the victims and leave her contact details with them. Once money was transferred to the couple’s bank account,Jhanvi would discard the SIM card used for making the calls. Sources said the couple has cheated more than 100 people.

The police said Sumit Brara,23,and Jhanvi live in Munirka and cheated people in Ghaziabad,Noida and Delhi. Sumit worked as a crime reporter in Ghaziabad-based Jupiter news channel while Jhanvi was earlier an airhostess with a leading airline.

Their two associates — Suraj and Manpreet from Ghaziabad — are absconding, the police said.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Neeraj Thakur said the couple bought SIM cards on different names and addresses on the basis of fake documents and opened accounts in different banks after producing forged documents like voter cards, driving licences and PAN card.

“They collected data of job-seekers from Naukri.com and other such websites and sent e-mails to job seekers offering them jobs in MNCs. They gave an account number to the applicant to deposit money and also mentioned a mobile number for contacting them. Once the money was received, they issued a fake joining letter to their victim through an e-mail. After withdrawing the money from the account, they discarded that particular mobile number and targetted others with a different mobile number,” Thakur said

The complainant said Jhanvi would ask job seekers to deposit Rs 6,865 in an account of Punjab National Bank at Bajaria (Ghaziabad) and gave a mobile number to contact her. Even fake joining letters were issued to them.

The police said Sumit had also worked as a store-keeper in a construction company at the Palam Airport where he came in contact with Jhanvi. Both quit their jobs after marriage and started cheating people, the police said.
