Community FM radio to be launched in Gurgaon

A new FM station 107.8 MHz is all set to hit radio sets in Gurgaon. The Restoring Force (TRF),a city-based NGO,is set to launch Gurgaons very own community radio station in March this year.

Spread across a 20-km radius that includes urban and semi-rural Gurgaon,the radio station will broadcast programmes on education,health,careers,jobs,entertainment and more.

The first programmes will be created by schoolchildren in government senior secondary schools in the area,where TRF is already conducting training programmes.

The 107.8 MHz slot was allotted to the station by the Information and Broadcasting ministry after it had applied for a radio licence in January 2008.

The community radio initiative aims to tackle problems of inequality in access and opportunity for schoolchildren in the area. It will hit the airwaves initially for four hours.

The TRF aims to reach 150 schools in Gurgaon within the 20-km radius of the frequency with their programmes. Plans are on to spend Rs 7 lakh for setting up the community radio from internal funds.

The language of communication would be Hindi.

Delhi-based Ideosync is TRFs technical partner in setting up the radio station,and will be involved in training and assisting the schoolchildren in the broadcast.
