After his debut in Student of the Year (2012), Varun Dhawan is super excited about his upcoming film Main Tera Hero. It’s one of those films the actor wanted to do. While he fields questions about going shirtless and opting for comedy, he admits to being nervous while shooting for this film. “No one from my generation is doing it, and once you attempt a comedy, doors for other genres open up,” he says.
Also starring Nargis Fakhri and Illeana D’Cruz, Main Tera Hero releases on April 4, and is about Sreenath “Seenu” Prasad, a boy-next-door who believes education really isn’t the ladder to success. “Named after the character’s parents’ favourite cricketers, Seenu wants to be the next Tata and Ambani but his argument is that if Albert Einstein can be who he is without studying, he too can,” says Varun, 26.
He is doing this film for reasons other than commercial. “I’ve grown up on comedy, watching actors like Govinda and Anil Kapoor,” says Varun, who is more inclined towards situational comedy than slapstick. With a director brother, Rohit Dhawan, who made Desi Boyz, Varun chose to work with his father David Dhawan first, for emotional reasons.
“My father is 60 and has a record of more than 40 films. He is the best in this genre, and is not getting any younger. I wanted to do comedy with him. I also happen to be my father’s youngest actor and he has high expectations from me,” says Varun.
Where his debut director Karan Johar pampers his stars, Dhawan senior makes them work hard and follow the rules. “Karan and my father are like chalk and cheese. With Karan, it’s all mollycoddling, but with dad, it’s all about professionalism, and being on time,” says Varun.
