Suspect may be among injured: Police
With several eyewitnesses claiming that the man who is suspected to have planted the bomb may be among those injured as he did not get enough time to escape, the Delhi Police are conducting a close check on all the victims.
We need to verify the background and antecedents of the victims. Some police officers are getting the details of the families of the victims. The police personnel have been told to go to the houses of the victims and to verify their identities. We suspect that the accused could be among those injured, said a senior Delhi Police officer.
There are 76 injured and 11 declared dead, including a few unknown and unidentified. We have the additional responsibility of checking the antecedents of the victims. At present, even the victims are suspects, until their background is confirmed, said a police officer deployed at RML Hospital.
Mahendra Tyagi,an eyewitness, said he saw a man in his early thirties clutching a briefcase just seconds before the blast.
I was standing at the gate waiting for others when this man came with a briefcase in his hand. Within seconds, the bomb exploded, claimed Tyagi,a resident of Burari village who had come to court in connection with a case against the governments plan to introduce cash in lieu of ration under the public distribution system.
I did not see that man after the blast. I think he was injured or killed as he did not leave the briefcase even after coming to Gate 5. I tried to locate him and inform the police, but there were many people who needed to be rushed to hospital, he said.
