Japanese Foreign Minister rides Metro
NEW DELHI: Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada,who was in the Capital on an official trip on Sunday,hitched a ride on the Delhi Metro and gave suggestions on improving the system. He also visited the Metro Museum at Patel Chowk station. Accompanied by DMRC officials,Okada took the Metro from Central Secretariat to Patel Chowk on the underground line. Delhi Metro,which is partly funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency,is one of the few metros in the world that manage to make an operational profit.
More trips on Raksha Bandhan,says DMRC
NEW DELHI: Expecting a huge rush on Raksha Bandhan day,the Delhi Metro has decided to run 187 additional train trips for the benefit of commuters. It will also deploy additional personnel to streamline the extra rush on the occasion,falling on Tuesday. Trains will be run at peak-hour frequency from 8 am to 8.30 pm on August 24 and around 21 trains,which are normally withdrawn from lines during off hours (12.30 pm to 4.30 pm),will be kept in service making 187 extra trips to a total of 2,484 on that day,a DMRC spokesperson said. Additional customer facilitation agents will also be deployed at busy stations such as Dilshad Garden,Shahdara,Welcome,Seelampur,Shastri Park and Pitampura to guide commuters. Extra personnel will also be deployed.
Man claims to be terrorist at IGI,held
NEW DELHI: A man claiming to be a terrorist was arrested with a knife and a can of petrol from Terminal 3 of IGI Airport. Rajkumar (27),was apprehended by the CISF around 2 pm on Sunday when he reached the terminal and threatened to cause damage claiming he was a terrorist,officials said. A knife and half-litre can of petrol were recovered from his bag. He has been handed over to Delhi Police. He seems to be mentally unstable, a senior airport officer said. The officer said Rajkumar also threatened the CISF guards with suicide but was overpowered at Gate No 3.
Three electrocuted in separate incidents
NEW DELHI: Two persons and a child were electrocuted in three separate incidents across the city in the last 24 hours. The first incident occurred late on Saturday evening in the Narela area,when a 30-year-old man was electrocuted while he was working on a boring well. The second one took place at Mandawali area of north-east Delhi on Sunday morning. Babu,aged 22,was electrocuted when he came in contact with an electric transformer. The third incident occurred in the Trilokpuri area on Sunday. Vijay,a 10-year-old boy,was electrocuted when he touched an electric pole at a local park.
MCD to pay damages for demolishing kiosk
NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has ordered the MCD to pay Rs 50,000 as compensation for demolishing a PCO booth,owned by a physically challenged man in Delhi University,for beautification of the area ahead of the Commonwealth Games. It directed the civic body to pay the amount to Satish Manchanda within four weeks for violating the stay order passed by the court against the demolition. The court meanwhile,granted 15 days to owners of 16 other kiosks to vacate the premises.
Buses supplied to DTC not sub-standard: Tata
New Delhi: Against the backdrop of several low-floor buses catching fire in the city,its manufacturer Tata Motors has refuted before the Delhi High Court the allegation that it supplied sub-standard vehicles to the Delhi government. We have a reputation and we are not flight-by-night company. The buses supplied to the DTC are not sub-standard. The allegation levelled is baseless, advocate Rajeev Nayar appearing for the company said before a bench headed by Justice A K Sikri.
Two incidents of cruelty enough to grant divorce
NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has held that a couple of incidents of cruelty by the spouse could fulfill the legal requirement for granting divorce. As per the court,it is not necessary to narrate each incident of harassment to prove mental or physical cruelty to obtain divorce. The remarks came while allowing the plea of a woman who had been living separately from her husband for 21 years and had sought divorce on the ground that he had subjected her to mental and physical cruelty on several occasions while living together. The lower court had dismissed her plea,saying her allegations were general in nature.
