A new art gallery, located at 13 Hauz Khas Village,is perhaps the first one in the city which is dedicated to cinema. 13 Basement Cine Darbar, nicknamed as 13BCD,is the result of collaboration between Japan Foundation and Cine Darbar.
13BCD was set up so that cinema enthusiasts could understand the craft of filmmaking through global cinema and its history. Also, debates and discussions around films seem to be missing in the Capital and through 13BCD,we wish to change that, said Supriya Suri, founder of 13BCD.
As one climbs the stairs that lead into a small dimly lit room at 13 BCD,one is greeted by flashes of curated video footages of the venues first exhibition, titled Tokyo Is Dreaming . It tells the story of everyday life in Tokyo and of the skyscrapers that light up the city once the sun sets. The videos have been gathered from films such as Tokyo Ga,Tokyo!,Lost in Translation,Adrift in Tokyo,Cafe Lumiere and Sans Soleil.
However, the gallery lacks space for a large audience and that could be a setback since it aims to hold discussions and key events. Nevertheless,it has created a space in the city for cinephiles to connect and in that sense, its not a bad start.
